Mattakeese is a derivative of the Native American name "Mattakeesette" and has been variously translated as "Planted Fields" and "Fields on the Harbor". These were "common fields". In their first summer, the Pilgrims had been hospitably entertained by the Indian Sachem Iyanough on these great fields and marshes.

The second translation, "Mattakeesett" is the more likely as the suffix "sett" in the Algonquin tongue means "by the water" and appears throughout the entire eastern area by the tribes who were part of the Algonquin Nation, including the Wampanoags who inhabited Cape Cod and its offshore islands.

Time and history relate to much of this locality with wind, sea and sand dunes; the "Mattakeese Wharf" tries to bring a little history to the interested diner. Call us soon for your reservation: 508-362-4511.
